Mike Hutchins, of Eddystone Road, Thurlestone, writes:

I was very surprised to see what I consider a racist letter from Mr Edgecombe, Gazette, April 8.

Racism is a poison in our society and it’s not just black and white, Jew and Gentile, it is also one a reader referring to people not from Devon or Cornwall in a derogatory way, in this instance as a grockle.

This may be a word used commonly in local pubs by locals, but it is offensive and you should not be printing it.

Upon reflection, Mr Edgecombe might like to apologise to the many people who enjoy this wonderful part of the world and in my case mix with, and have many, friends who are locals.
