The Ashburton Arms has donated more than £335 to SSAFA, the Soldier, Sailor, Airforce, Families Association.

Major Terry Hembrow, Royal Marines - retired, visited the landlord Ray Ashby to present him with a certificate in recognition of the donation of £131.61 to SSAFA, raised by donations from customers and quiz participants of the Ashburton Arms, .

Whilst Major Hembrow was there, Ray as Master of Salcombe Estuary Masonic Lodge presented the Major with a cheque for £205 being part of the charity draw from the ladies night, with a further £205 going to local charities at a later date.

Ray has been collecting for SSAFA since 1972 when he did a sponsored swim and the charity has been close to his heart ever since. SAFFA or the Armed Forces charity has been providing lifelong support to the military community in Devon since 1885.

Last year, Devon’s 100 volunteers raised over £500,000 to assist over 500 clients rebuild their lives in providing, amongst other things, practical, emotional, and financial help. The money raised in Devon stays in Devon, to help the current and ex-service personnel and their families.
