PRAWLE Point Coastguard Rescue Team were called to a report of suspected bomb near Gara Rock last Friday.

The report was received at around 2.45pm - and the Coastguard arrived on the scene between Rickham Sands and Seacombe Sands to investigate, followed by the Royal Navy’s Explosive Ordnance Disposable team.

Due to failing light and a rising tide, the teams were prevented from performing an extensive search.

The search continued the following morning at low tide, and the object was soon located.

It has been identified as an old gas cylinder, roughly four foot long and quite rusty.

A member of the public suggested on social media that it could’ve been dumped by salvagers when breaking up the Demetrios.

The Demetrios was a cargo ship that was wrecked at Prawle Point during the hurricane storms of December 1992.

The vessel was being towed from Dunkirk to a breakers yard in the Mediterranean, when it came free, drifted and smashed into the infamous rocks at the southern most tip of Devon.

The gas cylinder has been reported to South Hams Council, who will now dispose of the object.
