KINGSBRIDGE Police arrested a man on suspicion of drink driving after he caused a ‘trail of destruction’ between Kingsbridge and West Charleton.
The man, who was driving a grey Mitsubishi L200 truck, was arrested and taken into custody at Charles Cross Police Station in Plymouth in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Left behind in the truck’s wake were damaged verges, tire marks on banks and bits of vehicle. A spokesman for the police said the man could ‘hardly stand’ when police arrived but was outside the vehicle, leading to him being released on police bail.
Sgt Dave Green, Kingsbridge Police, explained that when there is an allegation of drink driving, the onus is on the police to prove two things, that a person was drunk and that they were driving. If, as in this case, the police have not seen the person driving, that suspect may be released on bail while an investigation is carried out.
Sgt Green said: ‘However a suspected drink driver will not be released until they blow under the limit. Public safety is our highest priority.’
