BEEHIVES playgroup in Salcombe have recently been learning about ‘people who help us’ - enjoying some hands-on experiences with local emergency services.

The children paid a visit to Salcombe Fire Station, which was organised by Mark Furness. Here they learnt that firefighters don’t only fight fires, but also help people at car crash scenes and even animals when they get into difficulty.

Hazel Burkett from Beehives said: ‘The children thought it was exciting to have a turn on the hosepipe, and I was amazed at how hot and heavy the kit was - and that’s before you would have to brave a fire!’

‘We also received a visit from PC Jo Pengilly and learnt that the police can be helpful, rather then just catching baddies! PC Pengilly also kindly let the children have a go at switching on the siren in her police car.’
