An HGV delivering aggregate to Avon Mill Garden Centre has ended up upside down in a field after the road gave way underneath it.

The driver only suffered a cut to his knee after he pulled over for another vehicle to pass and the edge of the road gave way, tipping the entire lorry over and leaving it on its roof in the field next to the road.

The road, between Rake Corner at the bottom of Loddiswell Hill and Avon Mill Garden Centre, which runs along the River Avon, is currently closed by police. Modbury Fire Station were also called to the scene.

Officers at the scene said that the road had been undermined, leaving just tarmac at the top, so it gave way under the weight of the truck. PC Rich Loxton said it could be a while before the lorry is recovered due to where it has ended up.

Bettina Rixon, shop assistant at Avon Mill Garden Centre, said: "We were waiting for our second gravel delivery of the day. When we heard what happened we rang the company to tell them they wouldn’t be able to use that road and they told us it was their truck.

"We are worried it could impact our Christmas deliveries as we have our Christmas trees delivered on big lorries and we think the road will be closed for a fairly long time.

"The police told us it could be months, we’re hoping for weeks.

"We are hoping that local people support us and still visit us during this time."

Avon Mill Garden Centre can still be accessed via the Well road through Loddiswell or through Woodleigh and they are open for business.

A Devon County Council representative said: "The road is closed and an inspector is on route to assess the situation. He will await his report."
