With the original date for the playing of the Gerry Cup being postponed from a wet Easter Monday, 12 couples turned out to pay in a foursomes medal, a testing format for all concerned writes Rosemary Sharps.
Showing what an amicable couple they are both on and off the course, last year’s winners Maggie and Alan Best took the title again for the fourth time in five years, a great achievement.
With a score of 69.5, Maggie and Alan were five points ahead of the second-placed couple, Julie and Robin Leach, who recorded a score of 74.5. Dot and Stan Kenneth came third, having edged Keith and Pam Hollingsworth into fourth place on countback when both couples scored 76.5. Our past lady captains held their annual stableford competition and dinner on a glorious day.
Twelve past captains played for the 3ft wooden spoon, which was won by Brenda Lee, who scored 37 points. The 12 competitors were joined by another seven past captains for a meal after the game.
Organiser Margaret Gregory said the competition has been played annually since 1957, when it was started by Pam Westaway, a former captain, and the 3ft spoon was carved and given to the ladies by a former captain Dave Boulden.
The scores were high for many of the 73 men that played in the June midweek stableford and seniors’ Millennium Trophy qualifier.
Leading the way with an impressive 43 points was Ray Jones (22), three points ahead of David Lort (27) and Roger Hurrell (8), who both scored 40 points, David coming second on countback. Ray as a consequence saw his handicap tumble to 19 and David came down to 26.
The Veterans’ Trophy saw 65 seniors turn to compete and was won by David Thorne (16) with a great 40 points. Coming second on countback was Richard Adcock (15), who scored 38. Jason Holtom (20) was third with the same score.
Karen Graddon (16) scoring net 71 won the ladies’ medal competition and Coronation Cup, Jo Shorrocks (1) came second with net 73 and Irene Lowry (11) was third with net 74.
In division two Anne Fowler (28) scored net 77 to come first on countback from Pauline Deschamp (24), with Christine Price (27) third with net 79.
Vice-captain Sally Errett (30) scored net 76 for first place, Margaret Balkwill (30) was second with net 77 and Margaret Gregory (29) third with net 82.
