Bigbury Golf Club

At just eight days old, Ivy May was introduced at Bigbury Golf Club by very proud parents club captain Liam Kimber and wife Nicola.

Their first child, Ivy May, was born weighing six pounds, eight ounces. A very proud father, Liam, said: “As you can imagine she is already the apple of my eye and is definitely going to be a daddy’s girl.”

Liam and Nicola have been married for some 10 years and tied the knot at Wembury Church. They married on 7/7/07, a very memorable date. With Ivy May being born on Friday, May 13, Liam and Nicola now have another most memorable date.

It seems this might well be the first time a Bigbury Club Captain has become a father during a year of office. Certainly, long-standing members at Bigbury Golf Club do not recall this ever happening before.

Members at the club are so thrilled for Liam and Nicola, and delighted to have Ivy May joining them. Colleague captains, Liam and Marlene, are wondering if Ivy May is a future ladies’ captain for the club?

On Sunday, April 29, the men held their Warrilow Cup and putter competition.

The competition was very competitive and the winners were Tony Pitcher (9) and Roy Stevens (11), with a rather good nett 66. There were three pairs in joint second place with a net 67 and among these pairs was Darren Mutton (4) who recorded two twos on the 10th and 17th holes. Congratulations to them all.

There was a field of 49 for the gents’ midweek stableford held on May 2. The convincing winner was Brian Henwood (12) with 40 points; Roger Hurrell (9) and Tony Bunch (9), shared second place with 36 points. There were five players recording a two in this competition and well done. However, of particular note, was Paul Edgecombe, with a handicap of 21, recording an eagle two on the 13th par four. Many congratulations Paul.

As reported last week, both the Presidents and Sheelah Creasy Bigbury Teams travelled to Okehampton Golf Club on Friday, May 4, and were expecting tough matches on this course.

Well, the matches proved very tough with both teams losing. The Presidents Team lost 51/2 to 11/2 and the Creasy Team lost 61/2 to 1/2.

Congratulations to Amy McSweeney, Jane Rickman and Ros Hanley for securing points for the Bigbury Teams. Marlene Johnson, the ladies’ captain, travelled with the Creasy Team and caddied for one of its players.

Marlene reports that while the course proved very difficult, it did provide a wonderful display of wild woodland flowers.

Carpets of bluebells mixed with white flowering wild garlic, banks and carpets of white wood anemones (with a clump of pink spotted), wild sorrel and Devon violets.

The midweek stableford took place on May 4, with 14 ladies playing. Caroline Alderton with a handicap of 17 was a convincing winner with 37 points. In second place and continuing her recent good form was Faye Pannell.

Bigbury Ladies have recently competed in regional England Golf Medal Finals, DCLGA Silver and Bronze Medal Finals and the Devon County Lady Vets Club Fourball Knockout. All competed valiantly in these major competitions but were not among the winners.
