Devon Senior Cup

Paignton Saints 0, B

eesands Rovers 3

Beesands put their league troubles to one side to focus on advancing in this cup competition and did not disappoint.

They attacked from the kick-off and had an early opportunity when Danny Tucker lobbed a ball forward for Lee Morgan, who was just beaten to it by the ‘keeper.

The match was all about the Bees attacking and the Saints with rare breakaways, but the Bees had not made their dominance pay off with goals.

One of the Saints’ rare attacks saw ‘keeper Toby Harvey save bravely at the feet of an attacker and his clearance set Bellamy off on a mazy run into the Saints’ area, but his shot lacked power and was saved.

The final move of the first half saw Bellamy’s corner cleared as far as Lang, who lobbed the ball back in for Broad.

He got under the ball and saw his header nestle on the roof of the net to leave things all square at the break.

The second half started as the first had finished, with the Bees attacking and an effort landing on the roof of the net.

The Bees finally go the lead their dominance deserved when, from a throw in, Garner clipped in a lovely ball that Bromfield got his foot to and steered into the goal for 0-1.

The goal gave the Bees confidence and this was reflected in a neat move with passes between four players before the ball reached Morgan and then Bellamy, who unfortunately slipped.

However, shortly afterwards the ball reached him just outside the area and he sized it up before his ferocious shot went just wide of the post.

Bees then decided fresh legs were what was needed and Tom Harvey, after a solid performance, was replaced by Kurt Thiele.

Bees were still enjoying the lion’s share of possession, with Morgan jockeying for position and weighing up a shot before playing it inside for Thiele, whose shot was deflected for a corner.

Bellamy’s corner reached Morgan and his probing pass found Thiele, but he shot over.

Bellamy was full of running all afternoon and thought he had a free kick when he was knocked over, but nothing was given.

He got up, retrieved the ball and played a lovely exchange of passes with Tucker before drilling the ball home to double the Bees’ advantage at 0-2.

Bees hard work was now paying off and the next goal followed as Tucker looked up and saw an advancing Hurt calling for the ball. His pass reached Hurt, who took it past a defender before dispatching it for 0-3.

Beesands continued to attack and the final move of the game saw Tucker control the ball with one foot before trying an acrobatic overhead shot that the ‘keeper saved.

This cup has seen the Bees win twice, scoring 12 goals without conceding. This form now needs to be translated into their league performances. The man-of-the-match award went to Will Garner.

Beesands next match, Saturday, is at home to Buckland and Milber. Kick off at 2.30pm. All are welcome.
