Ian Carr, of Wallingford Road, Kingsbridge, writes:

Does a fatal accident have to occur before something is done to curb speeding down Duncombe Street?

Motorists hurtle down and, having built up momentum, shoot up Waterloo Road or whizz round Bellevue Road.

There is a total lack of anticipation and it is unnerving if you are on foot.

These are not just boy racers, these are racers of all ages and gender. Buses – regular offenders – seem to have no concept of what it’s like to be walking on a narrow pavement while a large vehicle whistles past.

Wallingford Road also suffers from careless and thoughtless driving and I am sure there are other areas of town where calming measures would be welcomed.

There has been the odd brief police speed trap, which only worked for as long as they were present, and for them to be there on a regular basis would be a waste of manpower.

There is bound to be a letter in response from the council saying it doesn’t have the resources for any traffic-calming measures – but hey, what’s a life or a broken leg when you can save some money?

Maybe the potholes in Bellevue Road could be replicated in speeding hot

spots as an efficient deterrent incurring no cost whatsoever.
