A RECORD 28 people turned up for the Kingsmen’s free six week ‘learn to sing’ course this year.
The course, held at the Evangelical Church in Kingsbridge, ended with a show for family and friends, followed by an after-party at the Crabshell Inn.
The evening began with a welcome from chairman Dave Griffiths, before musical director Roy Hann and his deputy Gary Rowe took the Kingsmen and course members through a physical and vocal warm-up routine.
This was followed by the performance of some short songs, including ’Tzena, Tzena, Tzena’, ’Where Is Love’ and a rousing ’What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor’ - choreographed by Andrew Vaughan.
The main event showcased a joint performance of three songs from the course, ’Honey Little Ize’, ’Something’ and ’Hello Mary Lou’ - all to the delight of the audience. The new members were then presented with course certificates by chairman Dave Griffiths.
The Kingsmen then demonstrated close-harmony singing, with two quartets performing a song each. Jigsaw performed ’Catch A Falling Star’ and a new quartet -with no name as yet - sang ’My Wild Irish Rose’.
The Kingsmen closed the show with four songs from their repertoire: ’Amarillo’, ’Can You Feel The Love Tonight’, ’YMCA’ and ’Let’s Get Together Again’.
The Kingsmen are now hoping to recruit a good number of those who took part in the course to the group.
This is the Kingsmen’s 25th anniversary year and musical director, founder and honorary life president Roy Hann is looking forward to celebratory events scheduled through the year.
The Kingsmen will also be sining regularly at the Crabshell Inn during the summer months.
The Kingsmen rehearse on Wednesday evenings between 7.30pm and 10pm at the Evangelical Church, Fore Street, Kingsbridge.
