Kind-hearted Steiner School students put their baking skills to good use to raise money in aid of citizens of war-torn Ukraine.

A group of Class Six pupils decided to hold a cake-sale after learning about the Russia-Ukraine war in their (PSHEE (personal, social, health and economic education) lessons.

After discussing the situation, the group of nine students decided to help the people of Ukraine by baking cakes at home ready to sell at Meadowbrook Community Centre in Dartington.

The group raised £200 in just four hours and boosted by the success of the cake-sale decided to hold a second one at the school during a community work day.

The event was attended by parents and pupils who bought the cakes to raise a further £32.

All of the money raised will be donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Disasters Emergency Committee at the Post Office, which is providing direct aid to refugees fleeing the conflict.

Jeff van Zyl, the school’s education manager, said: “I am very impressed with how these students have worked without adult assistance to support others in need.

“Their actions demonstrate a real engagement with the world and a willingness to be vessels of change. I am very proud of them all.”
