I have been looking at the proposed development for the Kingsbridge quay and I believe two problems could be solved in one by installing a lock gate system towards the end of the harbour wall. This would provide high water at all times for safe, small-area water sports with a much-improved outlook for the new development block and proposed public gardens.
The lock would be open for a couple of hours either side of high tide for boats to access the estuary, and at other times the gate system would provide a footway for pedestrians and most importantly a much-needed flood prevention for the lower part of the town.
We also need to see a more detailed traffic plan if the roundabout at the bottom of Fore Street is to go.
Vehicles entering the town from Church Road – and there will be many more with the new houses on Belle Hill – need to be able to access both Fore Street and the supermarkets. Narrowing the vehicle lanes as proposed will only make the congestion worse and will still not provide a vehicle-free area for pedestrians, as there are always going to be cars and delivery vehicles needing to drive up Fore Street.
The main reason that the Cattle Market is not more utilised is that it is up a hill, out of sight and it takes time to get to the town, thus increasing the meter cost. If this was a free car park with appropriate signage, I am sure that many more would be pleased to ignore the inconvenience, use it and spend their money in town. The town is always full on the days that advertise free parking, and this helps the shops and restaurants.
