While I agree with some of the recent comments about dog fouling and owners who are too idle or arrogant to clean up after their pets, there still needs to be publicity about the other mess – human debris.
Walking my Westie around the paths behind Kingsbridge leisure centre, where there is a really good dog poo bin, I have seen whole area awash with sweet wrappers, plastic bottles, take-away cartons, etc.
I have seen mothers wheeling their children along in pushchairs, with the youngsters throwing out their sweet wrappers on the way, with no effort on the part of the mothers to pick up the rubbish.
On the beaches, I have witnessed similar behaviour – a woman burying her baby’s disposable nappy in the sand. Tampons and condoms often appear.
Many years ago, my son was running along the beach and he trod on a half-buried broken bottle. His foot was cut badly and we had to go to the surgery to have it attended to.
Had he trodden in dog poo, it would have been unpleasant but could have been easily washed off.
There will be a big increase in the dog poo problem whem the summer visitors arrrive but that certainly doesn’t excuse the local miscreants.
I would point out the dogs themselves are not at fault, their human owners are.
But, the litter problem is totally human orientated and perhaps, alongside the dog wardens, there should be litter wardens.
