THE FRIENDS of Kingsbridge Library received a donation of £250 from Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club last month, as the library begins a new lease of life, gaining independence from Devon County Council.

There has been a public library in Kingsbridge since 1926 and the present library building opened in 1974.

Maria Johnson, library supervisor explained: ‘From Friday, April 1, Devon Libraries will no longer be part of Devon County Council, and will be a mutual trust with charitable status - and as such can receive donations and bequests.

‘We are very excited about the possibilities this will offer, allowing us to be more responsive to community needs. Activities already include ‘sing a song’ sessions, with songs from the 1940s and 1950s, which helps those with memory loss and for socialising.

‘Sessions for adults with learning disabilities include: a Christmas party, card making, felting and making hats, icing cakes and the list goes on.

‘On Friday afternoons people can come along to play board games, dominoes and cards. New clubs this year are building and modelling with Lego, for children with their dads and mums, and adult colouring.’

‘The Friends of Kingsbridge Library support our regular events by providing tea and coffee, organise talks and raise funds to provide equipment. They are always looking for new, active members. You can also keep up with library news by following us on Facebook. We want to respond to local needs and are open to discuss ideas, let us know your suggestions!’

The cheque was received by Judy Snape on behalf of the Friends of Kingsbridge Library. Kingsbridge Estuary Rotary Club makes a £250 donation each month to local good causes, as judged by the club, with applications from organisations, clubs, and schools.

Applications are welcomed and can be made on the club’s website www.estuaryrotary.org.uk.
