A KINGSBRIDGE Community College student and her friends rescued a family of ducks this week after hearing a ‘squeaky noise’.

Rhiannon Heard, 14, was in the Recreation Ground in Kingsbridge, and said: ‘My friend had spotted the mother and about eight other ducklings, and then I heard a squeaky noise coming from down one of the pipes. So we asked the people if they had anything to grab the two little ducklings and we managed to get them out!

‘We set them free into the little river. We then went over to the other side of the park and saw the mother and only two ducklings. We managed to unlock the grate and grab them and then stopped the traffic and helped them cross the road.’

Rhiannon and her friends Candice Weeks, Michael Digby, Jed Burns and Mati Szczygielski, all 14-years-old who attend KCC, were spotted in their duck rescue by Brian Hayden, who said: ‘We spotted Rhiannon and her friends remove the grate to rescue the ducklings from beneath the grating at the end of the park in the Recreation Ground.

‘They were then reunited with an anxious mother duck, and escorted safely across the A379 to the estuary led by a very determined mother duck.’

Rhiannon stopped traffic to allow a safe passage to the estuary, where they ‘plopped’ safely in. Congratulations to Rhiannon and her friends for a successful avian rescue.
