As part of a class challenge, a 10-year-old South Hams pupil was able to raise more than £100 for her school residential.
All of the pupils in Class 3 at East Allington Primary School were given an ‘enterprise challenge’ where each child was given £5 and challenged to make as much money as possible.
The children had to come up with their own ideas, organise it themselves and then run an enterprise stall during the end of the summer term. Charli-Anne Barons decided she would like to run a dog show with a prize raffle.
However, since it would take some organising, she decided she would run the dog show after school had finished to make sure it all went smoothly. Before the school term ended, the class had an enterprise/open afternoon where the children held their ‘stalls’, where Charli-Anne received a prize for taking the initiative to run her event during the summer weeks.
Leading up to the event, she wrote to various businesses asking for help and support and then organised the dog show which took place on Saturday, August 4. The local businesses were more than happy to contribute, and Cathy Bowles from the Dog Lodge, Slapton, sponsored the event and judged the dogs alongside Charli-Anne.
South Moor Vets, Kingsbridge, supplied goody bags for the first prize winners of each class, as well as a prize for the Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show.
The Bear & Blacksmith, Chillington, gave Charli-Anne a voucher worth £50, and Salcombe Meat Company gave Charli-Anne a voucher worth £25 as raffle prizes.
Unfortunately, the date and time clashed with Woofstock in Dartmouth, but mum Kelly said, “I think those dogs that did turn up had a good time!”
Prizes were given out from every category such as ‘Best Puppy’, ‘Best Trick’, ‘Waggiest Tail’, and seven other categories. The winner of ‘Best in Show’ was Ruby the cocker spaniel with her owner, Annabelle Brown, and Reserve Best in Show went to Angel the Jack Russell and her owner, John Turrell.
After all was said and done, Charli-Anne was able to raise £114 for her school.
