SALCOMBE Town Council have called an extraordinary meeting to discuss the South Hams Council plans for Whitestrand car park.

A planning application has been submitted to create a ‘new suspended deck over the existing slipway, remedial works to the adjacent quay, car park layout modifications and the removal of a small section of rear wall, located in front of the toilet/ showers’.

The application is asking for granting of A1, A3 and A5 usage for the new deck structure, which means it could be used for shops, restaurants and cafes and hot food takeaways.

Gill Claydon, clerk to Salcombe Town Council, said: ‘The town council have not yet commented on the application as they want to hear what local people think. We have asked for an time extension but haven’t received a reply from SHDC so they are calling an extraordinary meeting to hear the views of residents.

‘Everyone is invited to come and see the plans and give their comments, we have invited SHDC representatives and we hope they will be in attendance.’

South Hams Council say in the design and access statement of the application that: ‘The works will provide a fantastic enhancement to the area and help with the long term vision to create a more usable and vibrant waterfront location which Salcombe deserves.’

The meeting will take place in the large hall downstairs in Cliff House at 6.30pm on Tuesday, July 5. To view the planning application, visit the South Hams Planning website: https://www.southhams.gov.uk/article/587/Planning and search for application number: 1527/16/FUL
