OXFAM in Kingsbridge could be forced to close its doors on Saturdays as they struggle to find volunteer cover.

Pip Harris, shop manager, said she is looking for someone to either cover the whole of the opening hours on Saturday or it can be split between two shifts, usually 8.45am-1.15pm and 12.45-5.15pm.

She said the role can be adapted to your needs, if you are taking an NVQ in retail or similar and need some retail experience, then you can use this for your CV; on the other hand, if you wanted something to keep you busy on a Saturday where you can meet people, it would be just a beneficial.

‘We need to have two members of staff on at all times for insurance purposes’, said Pip, ‘and we cover reasonable travel and parking costs and you get lunch.’

Any applicants must be over the age of 16, but apart from that, its open to everyone and anyone. You can contact Pip at Oxfam on 01548 857936 or via email: [email protected].

Currently, Oxfam’s focus is on the refugee crisis. Syria’s neighbours are struggling to cope with the influx of refugees, and Lebanon now has the highest per capita concentration of refugees worldwide with more than one million people making up approximately 25 per cent of the population.

On their website, Oxfam say they have reached ‘more than 46,000 people – 70 per cent Syrian refugees and 30 per cent Jordanians – in Jordan and over 85,000 people in Lebanon with clean drinking water or cash and relief supplies.

‘We are also helping families get the information they need about their rights, connecting them to services such as legal aid, as well as working on sanitation. Piped water schemes are being developed for Jordan’s Zaatari camp and Zarqa Governorate, as well as in the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon.

‘In both countries, Oxfam is planning on supporting refugees and vulnerable families from local communities.’ Find out more on the website: www.oxfam.org.uk.
