A venue boasting sea views is hosting an event to help people in crisis.

Start House in Slapton is holding an open day to raise funds for the British Red Cross on Sunday June 17.

The event has been made possible thanks to Start House owners Justin Haque and Katy Bowen. They are backing the Red Cross’ appeal for people to carry out one small act of kindness each day to promote the power of kindness.

Start House garden is set on a south facing hillside with panoramic views of Slapton Ley and the sea beyond. The two acre walled garden comprises of a series of terraces laid out with lawns, shrubs and vegetables.

Jeremy Lee, Devon President of the BRC said: “Start House garden captures the natural loveliness that Devon has to offer and this event will raise vital funds. The British Red Cross cannot thank Justin and Katy enough for their help in supporting our work.”

The Red Cross Kindness Calendar is now available for download, which has a number of ideas for small acts of kindness that can make a huge difference to whole communities.

Red Cross senior fundraiser Gill Mercer said:

“It doesn’t matter if it’s a flood, a first aid emergency or loneliness – when crisis strikes, whatever the scale, there is always an impact on individuals.

“At the Red Cross, we connect people’s kindness with people in crisis, by helping them to raise money, volunteer or campaign for issues that matter.

“Even small acts of kindness can be powerful and we’d love people to get involved.

“You can download the kindness calendar from redcross.org.uk and fill in each day with a kind act – such as signing up to shake a fundraising bucket, holding an office cake sale or attending an event like the one at Start House.

“We’re hoping to create a wave of kindness, so we’d love people to inspire others by sharing kind acts on social media using the hashtag #PowerOfKindness.”

The event is at Start House garden in Slapton and will take place between 2-5pm.

Adult entry is £4, with children priced at £2.

Refreshments will be available including cakes and cream teas.
