“It’s the economy stupid” rearrange the words to read “it’s the stupid economy” and you have the decision in principle by the ruling party of South Hams District Council to merge with West Devon Borought Council.

The councillors elected to represent the interests of thetax payers of the South Hams will saddle them with an estimated £2.3m, as West Devon it seems have considerable financial problems.

In addition, there is £4m to make its refuse collection department fit for purpose to be found.

West Devon is also proposing to borrow between £20m and £80m to purchase commercial property to rent out for income.

If this merger goes ahead, then those in the South Hams will be liable for 50 per cent of those sums.

There is no meaningful vote or referendum for South Hams residents on this matter.

Clearly SHDC councillors, except those of the opposition, have attended the Harry Potter school of governance.

If you are concerned as I am, then I suggest you write to your local MP.
