Kingsbridge Rugby Club held their first annual Cider and Hog Fest on Sunday, which went “really well despite the weather”.
The event, which will be the first in a long line of Cider and Hog Fests over the May Day bank holiday, attracted more than 400 people and saw live music, Tug’O’War competitions, a boules competition, a hog roast and enough cider to quench many rugby teams many times over.
Darren James, event organiser, said: “Considering the downpours, it was well attended. The Tug’O’War competition was run by a national Tug’O’War judge Nick Major, and Kingsbridge Young Farmers showed everyone how it was done, before the impromptu mixed event, which was won by the ’High House All Stars’.
The boules competition, run by Jean and John Turrell, which Darren said was a bit more like an “underwater boules competition” was won by ’Ha! Adam’s Having A Baby’ team: Matt Duffy, Martin Weeks and Mike Stevenson.
A spokesperson made an admission on the event’s Facebook page, saying: “After much deliberation, our expert panel of judges chose their favourite name in the #namethathog competition. “Unfortunately, they then got steaming drunk on ’Old Rosie’ and forgot the result, so we’ve called for a stewards enquiry.” The winners will eventually win a flagon of cider.
Darren thanked Rose Farm, who provided the hog roast and donated a percentage of their takings, and the bar staff, some of which, the “Cowboy Bar Staff” as Darren called them, turned up to lend a hand and worked all afternoon and night and kept the event running smoothly.
Darren also thanked all the local bands who got people up and dancing throughout the day, including Equally Guilty, James Montague, Dave Rubin, Kindred Spirit and the headliners Mannequins.
He also thanked their sponsors and those who donated to the event, including St Austell Brewery, Lower Grimstonleigh Cider, Green Valley Cider and South Hams Brewery.
The event was raising money for Kingsbridge Rugby Club and the Devon Air Ambulance, but the team haven’t had a change to count all their donations, so we will let you know how much they raised soon.
