KATS(Kingsbridge Amateur Theatrical Society) are recreating their previously successful production of Fiddler on the Roof.
The group have performed the musical three times before but are keen to perform one of the best-loved musicals of all time again.
The dynamic quartet who brought KATS’ the award winning production of Oliver in 2015 are producing the Fiddler on the Roof.
Musical Director, John Amery is pleased to be part of the team again and looking forward to another successful show with a “very strong company”.
The Oscar winning musical score is certainly one of the many highlights of the show; with songs ranging from the rousing opening number ‘Tradition’ to the abandoned ‘To Life’ and the hauntingly beautiful ‘Sabbath Prayer’ and ‘Sunrise, Sunset’.
The show’s storyline concentrates on Tevye, the poor milkman, his wife, Golde and their five daughters. Yente the matchmaker is busy finding husbands for the girls in the belief that any husband is better than no husband. The girls themselves, of course, have other ideas.
Fiddler on the Roof recreates the challenges faced by a Jewish community striving to maintain their traditions as their society moves in new directions. It’s a story about love, family, loyalty, friendship, faith; all the things which make us human.
The little fictional village of Anatevka in 1905 where the show is set, could arguably be any group of people, anywhere in the world, at any time. The themes of persecution, migration and homelessness are sadly still relatable today.
Not a jolly plot-line for a musical some might think, but Fiddler on the Roof is not a tale of woe. It is funny, poignant and uplifting and will take audiences on an emotional roller coaster as the story of this proud and resilient community unfolds upon the stage.
Lynne Deller’s experience and skill as a Director shines through this production and she has loved bringing what she describes as her special brand of “chaos and magic” to rehearsals.
Researching for the show has been a fascinating experience for co-director, Jill Brock. Jill has taken particular care to bring authenticity to the production, concentrating on the “ethnicity and origins” of the story.
Adding her characteristic fizz and professional expertise to the show is choreographer Suzie Boyle. Suzie commented that she is “delighted to return to KATS” and “so proud to work with such a lovely cast and wonderful creatives”.
Fiddler on the Roof is being performed at Malborough Village Hall from Tuesday, March 20, to Saturday, March 24. Tickets go on sale on Saturday, February 3, at Kingsbridge Information Centre or from the KATS website.
