THE 111TH Modbury Fruit and Produce Show was as tasty as ever, with 100 exhibitors and 500 entries showing the handiwork of the local community.

The weather was not very good for the growers this year, but there was still a huge selection of lovely flowers and vegetables on display, along with tables full of cakes, savoury items, jams and marmalades.

The winners of the show cups were Roy Jackman, Justine Slade, Jeff Booth, Angie Peters, Leah Stevens, Rachel Taylor, Angus Hope, Gloria Whitford, Pauline Ryder, Nigel Grist, K Duckering, Pam Jaynes, Freddie Lugger, Mary Timmis, P Gilbury, Brian Weeks and C Carter.

The Modbury School interclass trophy was won by class three and Mykla and Sam Tall shared the children’s trophy. Mr Carter deserves a special mention for entering a loaf of bread in the men-only section. The judges were very impressed with his loaf, citing it as the best they had ever tasted. It was later revealed that they had tasted Mr Carter’s first-ever attempt at bread. Modbury Show committee members hope this will encourage many more new entrants next year, saying: ‘Come on folks, have a go! If Mr Carter can do it, so can you!’

The show also bid farewell to its president John Burns, who has been on the committee for 25 years and president for 15 years, thanking him for all his hard work.

The committee would like to thank all the people who entered the show this year and the vice-presidents for their kind contributions.
