Vandals recently daubed Dartmouth’s Park and Ride bus stop with graffiti. Red and blue lettering, including the words “Ptown” believed to stand for Paignton, appeared over the walls and information boards of the bus stop - to the dismay of local residents and visitors.

Cllr Jonathan Hawkins, of Devon County and South Hams Council, said: “It seems a great shame that this is getting worse in town. I would hope that whoever did this or knows who did, will take responsibility and tell the authorities.

“The lack of youth facilities is partially to blame but this is totally unacceptable. Hopefully with the new Dartmouth Youth Group that is being set up this will help.”

Thankfully the graffiti was promptly reported to South Hams Council, who run the park and ride route, on November 14 and removed just days later. The graffiti was cleaned off the boards and painted over.

Cllr Keith Baldry, South Hams District Council Executive Member for Environmental Protection and Car Parking, said: “We recognise the negative impact of anti-social behaviour, including graffiti, on the local community and will not tolerate it. We work closely with the Police to share information and help make sure that those who are responsible are held to account. We also look to remove offensive graffiti as quickly as possible. In this instance, the graffiti at the Dartmouth Park and Ride bus stop was painted over on Friday November 19 and given a second coat on Monday November 22.

“I’d urge all local people to help us crack down on the problem and let us know if you see anyone acting suspiciously or vandalising our property. It’s quick and free to report graffiti and other issues on our website at https://southhams.gov.uk/report
