CHILDREN, parents, staff and committee members from Merry-Go-Round in Stokenham recently joined together for an ‘autumn community day’ in the preschool’s garden.

The whole community took part in a variety of gardening activities, from raking up all of the autumn leaves, jet-washing the entrance, redefining pathways and creating a variety of new learning areas.

Throughout the day, the garden was buzzing with activity and creative ideas. A plan was devised and before the end of the day, the Merry- Go-Round garden was equipped with a new mud kitchen, work station and digging pit.

And local tree surgeon, Tim White from Land Tec Projects, donated some freshly cut logs to create a little dining area.

This was followed by a willow structured dome, planted ready for bloom in the spring; an outside weaving station; a water play area and many transformed den making areas among the trees.

Even the mini creatures had a new home created - with a large mini-beast log pile. At the end of the day, the parents and staff watched as the children were busy exploring their new surroundings and establishing their musical talents with the new outdoor music stand.

Merry-Go-Round preschool puts great emphasis on outdoor learning, giving the children the freedom to explore and choose.

Emma Parker, the manager said: ’It was wonderful to see so many parents supporting our autumn community day.

‘We really value the importance of being outdoors and now we have created a fabulous outdoor area, which will inspire the children in a variety of ways and offer many learning opportunities within our natural environment.’

Vicky Harris, the new chairman said: ’It was fantastic, a completely satisfying day and a great way to get to meet other parents from Merry-Go-Round. The children were excited to explore the new additions in their beautiful gardens.

‘With so many positive, like-minded, community-spirited parents coming together, the day was sure to be a success. Thank you everyone – what a team.’

Merry-Go-Round preschool, situated on the Stokenham Primary School site, will be holding a free taster session morning for parents and toddlers on Monday, December 5, from 10am - 12pm.

And there will be a spring term garden project at Merry-Go- Round in the new year. If you would like to be involved, donations of plants will be gratefully received. For further information, telephone Emma on 01548 581440 or email [email protected].
