MALBOROUGH with South Hush Primary School have celebrated the Queen’s Birthday and raised money for Cancer Research UK last week.
On Friday, May 20, the pupils had a street party in the playground, bringing together the week of learning about the Queen and the decades that she has reigned over.
Jo Acourt, Higher Level Teaching Assistant at Malborough Primary, said children had spent the week researching and comparing different periods of time during the Queen’s 63-year reign and made their own ‘royally decorated’ plates.
‘Parents gave us loads of food’, continued Jo, ‘everyone was so generous and all the pupils had a wonderful time’.
The school also took this time to say farewell to their caretaker Mark, who writes and illustrates children’s books and has gone on to be a full-time storyteller.
On Wednesday, May 25, the Malborough Primary Race For Life event raised money for Cancer Research UK. Jo explained that the pupils were encouraged to do 10 laps of the playing fields, equalling five kilometres, but that they took part in ‘family groups’.
‘The family groups were made up of a Year 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and foundation pupil and they had to keep together so there wasn’t any competition, and they slowed down for the slowest member of the team. Once the younger pupils did one lap of the playing field they could go and sit in the holding area to cheer the rest of their team on.
‘At the end of every lap, each Year 6 student went to ask their teammates in the holding area if they would like to join in on the next lap or if they wanted another rest. They all ran together as a group so the older pupils looked after the younger ones.
‘At least two foundation pupils completed the whole ten laps, as well as other younger pupils, they were inspirational. They all received a medal and an ice lolly at the end, and they all really enjoyed themselves.’
Each child was given a sponsorship form to take home and gather sponsors and the final total is yet to be counted but Jo thinks they raised ‘quite a bit’.
