EARLIER this month, Year 7 took part in the Kingsbridge Community College ‘learner olympics’.
Each tutor group studied a different country, which they researched and used as inspiration for their team.
The whole year group got into the spirit of things, and gained experience of what life might be like in other countries across the world.
This was also an opportunity to gain a better understanding of how something like the Olympics brings people together for a celebration of culture and sport.
To start the day, each group performed a dramatic piece based on the sporting traditions of their allocated countries.
This ranged from Malawi tribal dancing to the Fijian ‘Haka’ and Paraguay’s national anthem.
Every tutor group showed fantastic team work in preparation for the performances.
This was followed by an afternoon of team-building games, including plank walking, blind-fold water carrying, target frisbee and giant Jenga.
After lunch, the students took part in a more traditional track and field sports day, where students competed against each other by representing their tutor groups and countries. The day finished with a tutor relay race, in which the teachers went head-to-head in the final sprint.
PE teacher Mr Burman said: ‘There were some amazing performances and a great effort from everyone involved.
‘The overall winners on the day were the tutor group 7DN, and a lot of tired, happy students went home for a good night’s rest.
‘The day was a celebration of the values that the Olympics represent, and a chance to show the year group’s mantra ‘great things never came from comfort zones’, is alive and well.
‘It was great to see so many students gaining self-confidence from participating in such a fantastic day.’
