THE children from East Allington Primary School and Foundation Stage Unit recently received a visit from Gemma Lewry, an employee of the Dogs Trust.

To begin with Gemma talked to the children about how to look after a dog responsibly by doing such things as feeding the dog correctly, ensuring the dogs have regular flea treatments, leaving toys for the dog to play with and grooming the dog regularly.

Gemma went on to teach the children how to keep safe around dogs and how to stand if a dog looks threatening.

Head of teachings and learning Karen Partridge said: ‘All the children went home with a clearer message about safety around dogs.

‘The Dog Trust relayed the message that although most dogs are safe to be around, we should all approach dogs cautiously and never touch an unknown dog without first checking with the owner.

‘The children really enjoyed the visit and with such an important safety message I would recommend other schools take up the offer of the free sessions.’
