The inquest into the death of Dennis ’Denzil’ Corbin took place today, with the coroner ruling it accidental.

Mr Corbin was travelling in a transit van, on his way back from a party at The Cracking Crab restaurant, Polzeath, Cornwall, with four other people in the early hours of September 24, 2016, when he opened the door and either stepped or slipped out, while the vehicle was travelling somewhere between 10 and 20mph.

Assistant coroner Andrew Cox said that Mr Corbin, 23, had been drinking at the party and was under the influence of alcohol at the time, which could have impaired his judgement.

He said that he suffered a head injury, which lead to his death.

Dr Amanda Jeffery, forensic pathologist, said that Mr Corbin had an "extremely thin skull", something that varies significantly from person to person, and therefore he was prone to more fracturing events.

She said he suffered "a significant head injury, fracturing of the skull, bruising, swelling and bleeding around the brain".

Mr Cox said that the fall from the van under "normal" circumstances would have left someone with a bruise and they would probably have picked themselves up and carried on.

He concluded by saying the Mr Corbin opened the door to the van himself. That it was "an intentional act with unintended consequences" and ruled it an accident.

A ’Doublemint Denzil’ charity day will take place tomorrow, Saturday, May 20, hosted by Salcombe RFC, including a charity football match which will see a Corbin Family and Friends team take on a select team from Salcombe Town Firsts in the first annual Dennis Corbin Cup, and is set to kick off at 2.30pm.

There will also be a hog roast, bouncy castle, live music, and fun for all the family. A trophy has been sponsored by the Winking Prawn Group, including the Island Street Bar and Grill, where Dennis worked.
