A Dartmouth mechanic has been named Top Technician 2021.

Locally born and bred Kevin Toms from FRL Auto Services has been named this year’s winner.

He was one of five competing in the final of the competition held in Nottingham.

Kevin had previously reached the finals in 2017.

Top Technician is a national competition that was established in 2002 by Aftermarket magazine in order to find the UK’s most skilled automotive technicians. It has evolved into the key competition to win in the sector. The early rounds take place online, with the final rounds involving practical sessions that take place live, under workshop conditions. First and foremost, Top Technician is a training tool, allowing technicians to test their knowledge and learn where they require further development.

Kevin said “An example of a task would be to strip an engine then write a report on the state of the crankshaft”

Kevin won a major cash prize, tools and training.

Alex Wells, Editor of organisers Aftermarket magazine said:

“Kevin’s victory in Top Technician 2021 is more than well deserved. He has made it to the finals and semi-finals on a number of occasions, before finally winning in 2021. Each time he has entered and made it to the live semi-final and final stages, he has managed to make it from being one of around 1,000 techs, to one of ten, then five and now he is number one. Winning the prize is a testament to his dedication to his trade, his skill as a mechanic and his wide and varied knowledge of automotive technology. We are so pleased for him, and we congratulate him unreservedly.”

The award was presented at the Top Technician and Top Garage Awards Evening held in Milton Keynes.
