WORK is due to start on coastal defences at Beesands later this month, following damage to the sea defences in last February’s storms.

South Hams Council have appointed a contractor, Landmarc, to carry out the essential work on the coastline’s rock armour.

The final details of the work to be carried out, and the specific timetable are yet to be agreed, however work is expected to start at the end of September.

The council has secured funding for the total cost of the emergency works from the Environment Agency’s recovery fund.

Cllr Hilary Bastone, executive portfolio holder for customer first, said: ‘We are very pleased that we have secured funding to enable us to repair the damaged defences before the onslaught of the next winter storms.’

The council will be keeping residents and businesses informed of developments as they progress.
