THE Rotary Clubs of Kingsbridge and Kingsbridge Estuary came together last weekend to raise enough money to send ShelterBoxes to Nepal.

Supported by Kingsbridge residents and shoppers at the Farmer's Market and Morrisons, the groups raised over £1,000 to support people affected by the earthquake in Nepal.

The disaster has so far claimed the lives of more than 7,500 people and injured more than 14,500.

The UK's Disasters Emergency Committee has warned of the risk of outbreaks of cholera, dysentery and other water-borne diseases as people are lacking in shelter, clean water and sanitation.

Phyllis Angliss, Rotary Club of Kingsbridge, said: 'It was really successful. Fundraising was organised by Sylvia Griffin, chair of the international committee, with the support of members of the Rotary Clubs of Kingsbridge and Kingsbridge Estuary and we raised enough to send two ShelterBoxes.

Peter Lee, Rotary Club of Kingsbridge Estuary, said: 'Each box is tailored to each disaster, but typically includes a disaster relief tent for a family, thermal blankets and groundsheets, water storage and purification equipment, solar lamps, cooking utensils, basic tool kit, mosquito nets and children's activity pack.

'It is hoped that this small gesture will save a few from the hardship they will be suffering, at the present time.'
