Sandy Gilbert, of Kings-bridge, writes:
Stanborough Chorus must be congratulated on its outstanding performance of Carmina Burana in St Edmond’s Church last Saturday.
On the way there, I was pondering how the singers were going to manage the key note percussion that is so vital to the piece. We certainly heard it.
Professional percussionists from the Festival Instrumental Ensemble were engaged for this occasion.
The addition of visiting soloists – Henry Tozer, a well-known former Kingsbridge student, who at short notice also sang in substitution for soloist Leslie Baker, who had been taken ill, and Heloise West – along with the able vocal contribution of young students from Kingsbridge Academy, ensured that the work soared to the very highest arches of the building.
I appreciated the translation of the words in the accompanying programme.
It helped to capture the light and shade of humour in a work that is more widely remembered for its more serious, powerful, universal themes.
Well done Stanborough Chorus. A hugely challenging piece brought to our doorstep as a memorable tapestry of sound.
Happy 30th birthday.
