FOLLOWING the tremendous success of the village hall in Chillington, there is a need for new committee members to help run it.
After many years of planning by the Chillington Community Association and others, the new hall was officially opened in 2014, and now has regular bookings for the space, hosts birthday parties and meetings and is looking forward to being the location for its first wedding reception next year.
Now the hall is up and running, chair Greg Chambers and his team are looking for ‘new blood’ to step up and help out.
The basic team of officers needed includes a chair - Greg is happy to be vice-chair and support whoever it is that takes the role, but is juggling work and family commitments - a secretary or admin person, a treasurer and a caretaker.
The more volunteers who come forward, the less commitment from each member is required as jobs are spread among the committee. They only meet four times a year and most communication is conducted via email so there is not that much of a time commitment needed from volunteers.
The committee have recruited an events manager, so anyone who would like to join the events team and help organise summer fairs, barbecues, quiz nights and similar would also be welcomed.
The hall already has a cleaner who comes in and cleans the hall on a regularly basis, so a caretaker is required to liaise with her, check the hall for clean tea towels, loo rolls and general tidiness once or twice a week, and to be a contact for anyone who notices a problem with the hall.
‘We want to voice loudly how successful the hall is’, said Greg, ‘New young families have moved into the village and they are some of the people who can get the most out of the hall, so anyone who would like to help out would be great’.
The playground outside the hall is consistently used by children and young people after school, especially in the summer and groups that use the hall include children’s dance classes, Merry Tots, bridge club, Stokenham Art Club and many more.
‘It was a small group who made the hall happen,’ said Chris, ‘but now we need new blood’.
The next AGM is to be held at the hall on June 22 at 7.30pm. If you would like to find out more about joining the team, contact Greg on [email protected].
