A CHEQUE for £1,401 was presented to The Triangle Centre in Kingsbridge this week in memory of Susan Hargrove, a former teacher and governor of Goosewell Primary School in Plymstock.

Susan died on Easter Sunday this year, after an eight and a half year battle with breast cancer. She’d been a teacher at Goosewell School for twenty years, and was a highly respected teacher, often described as ‘one of the finest.’

In November 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought bravely, continuing to teach up until 2011 when she became too ill to continue work, however she then volunteered to be a governor at the school, a position she kept until she died.

The money was principally raised by Nerys Lyne, a friend of Susan’s brother Ian and his partner Deb. Nerys visited Kingsbridge and The Triangle Centre only once, but was so impressed with the service and touched by Susan’s story that she felt impelled to do something to help.

When she went back home, she enlisted her colleagues at Pets At Home in Yorkshire to take part in the Race for Life ‘Tough Mudder’ challenge on July 4. Other events were also held at the local stores.

Jo Hargrove, Susan’s mother said: ‘Susan was such a positive person and made the best of life. When she graduated, she came to live in Devon because she knew that we would eventually come to live here.

‘We’d like to thank Nerys and her colleagues up in Yorkshire who completed the challenge and raised so much money for the Triangle Centre, and of course, to all the people who donated money - we are extremely grateful to all of them.’
