LEMON Velvet is hosting a charity fashion show to raise money for Juliet Bill’s next trip to the refugee camps in Greece.
The show will be a musical production and catwalk show featuring eight local models all giving up their time for the cause, and will held at Kingsbridge Community College’s main hall on Thursday, May 19.
‘The situation in camps changes hourly, literally,’ said Juliet. ‘If it rains, everybody needs their flimsy shelter fixing, dry clothes, warm food. If the sun comes out, being mainland Europe, it’s boiling, everyone needs sunscreen, water, shade and insect repellant. Children are being hospitalised due to heat stroke, mosquito bites and snake bites.
‘Being able to go armed with event-changing cash was the most wonderful feeling ever. I could approach projects and say ok, you need 250 children’s sun hats, 100 solar chargers, shampoo and 1,000 bananas?? Ok...done.
‘Buying enough fresh ingredients that is turned in to 5,000 servings of delicious nutritious vegan food for two days is amazing.
‘Being in a position to help a project that creates pop-up mother and baby units so they can breast feed, weigh their baby giving them precious reassurance and wash their babies. Without this they were washing with filthy outside tap water. .
They can dress their C-section wounds. They all have C-sections, whether they need it or not as its deemed more ’controllable’ - in, cut, baby out, stitched up, back to camp two days later.
‘So, whilst I don’t claim to be a charity as such, I can give people’s kind donations directly in the hands and tummies of those who need it the most.’
Tickets to the event include a glass of wine and canapés from Juliet’s restaurant The Old Bakery. The Lemon Velvet fashion show will include labels from over Europe and Cornwall.
Owner Janice Gordon will move Lemon Velvet into the hall as a pop-up shop for one night only so that everyone can try and buy on the night. ‘After a show, and a glass of wine we are going to drop the lights and play some cool music so woman can relax and try some fresh summer stock on it will be a hoot’, said Janice.
‘We haven’t done a fashion show at the school before’ she continued, ‘but it was the idea of a professional team behind the music and lighting and the space available for a run way that attracted us.
‘Because so many people have heard of Juliet’s devotion to the cause and her popularity in the town I thought we might need a bigger venue.’
Tickets are available at Lemon Velvet, 23 Fore Street, Kingsbridge.
