A man who recently lost his mum to cancer and whose wife is now in remission is cycling the four corners of mainland Britain in memoriam and to raise money for the cancer ward.
Starting on September 19 at Dunnet Head, Scotland and finishing at Lizard Point, Cornwall, Kalvin Lott plans to cycle more than 1,000 miles in memory of his mum and to raise money for the breast cancer unit at Torbay Hospital.
Kalvin, who works at Burford’s Locksmiths, Kingsbridge, chose the unit because it has given his wife, Janet, the all clear after 12 long years of battling breast cancer. The unit is planning on building a new reception further away from the chemotherapy treatment area, which the hospital is hoping will make a more comfortable experience for people registering for their first time.
The 52-year-old will be cycling from Dunnet Head, Scotland the northernmost tip of Britain’s mainland to Ardnumurchan Lighthouse, Scotland, the most westerly point, to Lowestoft, Britain’s most easterly point, to the most southern tip, Lizard Point, Cornwall. His trip will be solo, and completely unaided.
A number of residents and businesses stepped up to support Kelvin, and he wants to thank his dad, David, and his wife, Janet, for their support; Burford’s Locksmiths, Kingsbridge for giving him the time off work; Julia Wingate of the Trading Post, for supplying him with his bike; Laura Underwood of Hertz Car & Van Hire, Plymouth; Claire Doyle, Torbay Hospital Trust Funds and Alex Williams of Torbay Healthcare for “the inspirational words of, ‘dance before the music is over,’ and, ‘live before your life is over’.”
Kalvin said: “Some people might say I am bonkers, some people may say I am mad, but only time will tell, and as my good friend Glen Berrows would say: ‘A good positive mental attitude can do you no wrong.’
“I thank everyone who wants to sponsor me for this good cause, as 100 per cent of the monies raised goes directly to the breast cancer unit to help women who are going through this difficult time in their lives.
“Eat. Sleep. Cycle. Repeat!”
