I am writing to comment about the article ‘Juliet’s first mission to aid refugees [in Calais] was just the start’, Gazette, November 13.

First, why have you used the word ‘refugees’ in your headline, since there is no evidence so far that all the people trying to get to the UK from Calais are refugees? They cannot be defined as such unless they have been processed.

Many of them are young, aggressive men who are economic migrants and certainly many of them are not from places where bombing is taking place, as suggested.

Juliet says we must stop the bombing – most of this is being carried out in Syria by Islamic State and their own leader, now assisted by Russia.

Maybe Juliet should alter her schedule to a trip to Syria, not Greece. If she is serious about helping those in a war-torn state, that is where she should be headed.

Having considered all of the above, I do not consider myself hard-hearted in any way – it is too easy to be sucked into an argument where we have to help whatever.

How does Juliet know that those she is helping are not Isis members aiming to do us harm by infiltration, after having been threatened by them already.

Let those who are in charge of the security in this country deal with the situation and give aid to those who need it.

Charity is all very well, but sometimes it is totally misplaced by those aiming to help.

I am very sorry to sound hard and with none of the milk of human kindness, but having learnt the lessons of life I do not now accept all people at face value. Nor should any of us.

Very sorry, Juliet.
