I wish to support last week’s letter in the Gazette from another resident of Bigbury-on-Sea regarding the monstrosity of a building to be erected over-looking the Mermaid Pool on the eastern side of Burgh Island.
It doesn’t hold out much for the future buildings in this country if this was the winning entry in an architectural competition. The design reminds me of the air-raid shelter I had to dive into on my first day at primary school. What makes the owners of the hotel think that any guest using the Mermaid Pool will wish to be viewed by guests using the ‘suite’?
The building is a complete eyesore and a carbuncle on the landscape. The owners have already covered part of the grounds with solar panels, which I look down on, so they are destroying the very beauty of the island that their guests pay money to stay there for.
I cannot understand how councillors voted for this dreadful application. And as for Cllr Brazil, he came round Bigbury-on-Sea with the Lib Dem district council candidate stating that he was against development in Bigbury-on-Sea and then he voted for this concrete shed.
Yet again, though, votes are cast by councillors who are not affected by the application and really are not very interested in other parts of the district.
People I know who have looked at the plans have been aghast at its sheer ugliness. Why add further buildings on the island? Are the owners hell-bent on destroying its beauty?
