TONY Porter, former owner of Burgh Island, will be launching his memoir Whatever Next? at Harbour Books in Kingsbridge on Saturday.

The book recounts an extraordinary life, including time in the fashion industry rubbing shoulders with the likes of Twiggy, Cilla Black and other stars of the sixties.

He began his career selling paint for ICI in Nigeria, where he married Beatrice and they had three children. Following the outbreak of the Biafran war, he returned to England, selling high fashion for the Kensington store Biba, founded by his sister-in-law Barbara Hulanicki.

Subsequently, he set up his own fashion PR business in the West End, and was instrumental in setting up British (later London) Fashion Week.

With the help of Beatrice their PR company prospered, allowing them to buy a yacht, and in due course, Burgh Island.

Tony explains: ‘There are many autobiographies written by people more famous than me, but very few readers that can recount so many hilarious ups and downs as mine. As readers work their way through my life they will wonder to themselves… whatever next?’

Tony will be telling stories and signing books at Harbour Books, Mill Street, Kingsbridge between 11am and 1pm on Saturday, February 13.
