THE tenth Aveton Gifford Classic Car Show raised a record amount of money for junior projects in the village.

About 1,100 adults came through the gates, with many children also enjoying the day.

They had the highest number of exhibits yet seen, with 120 classic cars bathing in the bank holiday sunshine. And for the first time, Dartmoor Vintage Motorcycle Club came along with 40 classic motorcycles.

Other highlights of the show included an Austin Chummy and some huge Bentleys from the early 1960s.

The numbers are yet to be finalised, but organisers expect to have raised around £5,000 this year - up from about £4,000 the previous year.

The proceeds from the car show are used to fund junior projects in the village, one of which is the parish swimming pool.

This year it is hoped to raise sufficient funds to install a solar powered pump, which, it is estimated, will save nearly £1,000 a year in electricity charges, helping to ensure future sustainability of the pool for the community.

Tony Porter, organiser of the show said: ‘As always, people loved the setting and the peace of the location.

‘Unlike other classic car shows, we have no music, no bar and no competitions.

‘We were afraid, with the glorious weather, that there would be too many people on the beach, but we were as crowded as any beach I’ve ever seen!

Tony continued: ‘We would like to thank over 40 volunteers from the village who made the show possible. These people, who live within a few hundred yards of the show ground, gave up their time to make it all happen.

‘And we’d also like to thank the church for lending us the marquee for the organisers’ tent, making all the difference.’

Tony added: ‘As people left, people hooted their horns and said, “see you again next year!”’
