A village fair week was "probably the best yet" as sun shone down on the glorious South Hams and its people made merry.

Ugborough’s annual week of festivities draws loyal supporters from across the district, and culminates in fair day on Saturday.

This year’s events went "exceptionally well" according to organisers, who were blessed with fantastic weather for the whole week.

Things kicked off with fair week football on Sunday, before the dog show and pizza in the square on Monday, quiz night on Tuesday, bingo on Wednesday and the first ever Land Rover rally on Thursday. Friday saw another fair week first, a poker tournament in the village hall, before the big day dawned on Saturday.

On offer was a climbing wall in the square courtesy of Dart Rock at Buckfastleigh, cream teas, a barbecue and Pimms stall based in Gloria the vintage horsebox. New local business How Now Dairy brought along some young calves, only rivalled in cuteness by organising committee chairman Shelley Hutcheon’s tame lambs, and there was great music courtesy of half of Ivybridge act Glass Curtain and local medics-cum-rockers The Longfaces.

Shelley said: "This was the very first time we had the Land Rover rally and it was a brilliant event. There are quite a few Land Rovers in the village and we had 43, from Series 1s right up to modern ones.

"Poker on the Friday night was also a really good success. We had great weather on Saturday, and the cream teas and the barbecue went down really well.

"The morris men said to me what a strong village community we have here, and we had such phenomenal support from the whole village. Thanks to everyone who helped organise and run the day."

Parish council chairman George Beable paid tribute to Shelley and the other organisers. He said: "I thought that the Ugborough Fair Week events were probably the best yet and it all culminated in a wonderful sunny fair day, with the Pimms stall in particular doing excellent trade.

"Congratulations are due to the small but hardworking committee, which was ably lead by Shelley Hutcheon, and so very well supported by all the community. It’s always good to see to see so many old friends who return to the village for the fair each year."

The week raises money for local causes, primarily the village hall, the church and the church bell appeal.
