I have notified the Racing Society of the death of racing pigeon GB 15E07212.
This pretty bird was alive and well at 11.40am outside my home, but when I returned from my walk just 40 minutes later I found it dead in the road from an injury to its leg, foot and belly, like a car had hit it while it just stood there in the road, as pigeons do.
On this quiet estate road it is hard to drive at more than 10mph, so to the heartless driver of the car, I would say that there is no such excuse as ‘it’s just a pigeon’. It had a heartbeat and life just like you have, and you could have averted its death by sounding your horn in advance or by stopping your car and scaring it away from death. So I can only assume that this was a deliberate act to erase this pigeon’s life.
This is typical of so many so-called humans out there, that it’s okay to snuff the life of a bird on the road, especially a pigeon, when it only takes the sound of a horn to make it fly, or in this case stop the car for a few seconds.
Well driver, I hope you have a long and happy life – and watch out for car drivers like yourself when you happen to be walking one day.
It will be breeding season for our feathered friends soon and they will have other thing on their minds than traffic. So please, spare a thought for them. They are becoming rare these days, so slow down and sound your horn – don’t drive over or into them.
