The next Salcombe Coastal Marathon will be held on Saturday, October 21, where runners and walkers will travel from Torcross to Bantham, overlooking the scenic views of the South Hams.

The non-competitive event will be raising money for two charities-the South West Coast Path Association who fund maintenance on a section of the path used and PORT-ER(a Devon based charity for amputees).

To motivate the runners, jelly baby and water stops will be situated at Lannacombe, just before East Prawle watchstation, Salcombe and Hope Cove.

For those looking for a relaxed walk and a social food break, there is opportunity at Salcombe to purchase refreshments or lunch that will not be included in your time.

A spokesman involved in the organisation of the event described the event as, “the only marathon where people stop for a pub lunch.”

The nature of the event remains the same with entrants able to run or walk including two coach transfer times to allow for different speeds.

Any support would be greatly appreciated by the runners and walkers, as would any donations to charity on the day.

The organisers hope that their previous success at raising money will be repeated. At the Spring event, £1000 was raised separately for the South West Coast Path Association and PORT-ER and a further £1,200 was raised for pancreatic research.

The South West Coast Path Association has partnered with the National Trust during the month of October to run a variety of events throughout October. People can either get involved with one of the organised events or sign up and create their own event.

The Association would like to encourage as many people as possible to use the coast path, get logging their miles and hopefully raise money to ensure the upkeep of the coastal path is maintained.

A small registration fee of around £10 and any funds raised will be split equally between the SWCPA and the National Trust and all involved will be given a bright red challenge t-shirt.

However, a spokesperson from SWCPA assured that all the funds that go to the National Trust come back to the South West and not into the National Trust as a national organisation.

If this is something you would be interested in, the next event will be held on Saturday, May 5. Please contact [email protected] if you would like further information or to register your interest for the next event.
