A church is calling to all knitters, crafters and generally anyone who would like to make a tribute to the fallen and those who risked their lives, marking the centenary of the end of the First World War.

As an act of remembrance, St Edmund’s Church on Fore Street, Kingsbridge are knitting poppies and are encouraging family, friends and Knit n’ Knatter groups alike to do likewise.

The poppies will be used to create a commemorative art installation in the Lady Chapel and, if enough poppies are knitted, from there flowing down into the body of the church.

The Royal British Legion, Kingsbridge and District Branch, will be staging a ‘Poppy Appeal’ launch service at St Edmund’s on Sunday, October 28 at 10am, where the poppy display will be opened and will remain in place until after Remembrance Sunday on November 11.

Duncan McDonald, St Edmund’s Church warden, said: “We want to make this a commemorative act that the community of Kingsbridge are proud to be a part of, and I invite the whole community to get behind it and get knitting!”

Poppy knitting and crochet patterns are readily available on the internet, or you can pick up a paper copy from the church. Finished poppies can be left in the church.
