POLICE in Kingsbridge are working closely with churches and other religious belief and faith organisations to help prevent theft from their premises.
The move follows increasing reports of theft and burglary from religious establishments. Crimes include forced break-ins and theft of collection boxes and other belongings. It is believed that thieves are deliberately targeting these establishments while unattended.
As part of the crackdown, local people are being encouraged to remain vigilant and share any suspicious information via a ‘Faith Watch’ scheme, which has been set up to tackle the issue. The aim of the scheme is to provide a link for communities from all religious denominations to tackle the issue together.
PC Dave Tungate said: ‘Over the past year, numerous thefts have taken place from religious establishments. We urge these organisations to come together as part of the Faith Watch scheme and ensure their security is appropriate, to help deter criminals.’
Reverend Jackie Taylor from Kingsbridge, Dodbrooke and West Alvington churches said: ‘As faith communities in Kingsbridge and the surrounding areas, churches of all denominations really welcome this brilliant initiative. Faith Watch will enable information to be shared and it will help keep people, belongings and possessions safe.’
PC Tungate added: ‘We hope that as a community everyone can join together to support the scheme and help deter criminal activity in the area.’
Anji Chant from Spiritualized added: ‘Churches welcome those who have difficulties that might drive them to a life of crime. Please just come and ask for help. We will assist you in any way we can.’Anyone who has any information regarding these crimes is asked to contact Devon and Cornwall Police by telephoning 101 for non-emergencies, or 999 if they witness a crime happening.
