The sun shone brightly on the 98th Loddiswell Show at the weekend, with a little something for everyone in the show-ground.

Held on Saturday, August 4, Loddiswell Show attracted locals and visitors from around the area to come and enjoy all the goings on, including Birds of Prey, Battlefield Live Kernow, Tug’O’War, dog show and vintage vehicles, as well as all the traditional fun, games and prizes.

Battlefield Live Kernow was a new attraction for 2018, involving a large laser-tag arena where youngsters could take it in turns to try and shoot the opposing team with infra-red beams to earn points. A safer, less painful version of paintball, which kept kids entertained all day.

South Moor Vets ran the dog show, which was very well attended, despite the heat, with people shading their dogs under trees between classes. Ran by veterinary nurses Bryony Woods and Chloe Walton, the 15 classes were all judged and prizes presented for everything from ‘Waggiest Tail’ to ‘Dog Most Like Its Owner’.

The produce on display, grown by Loddiswellians in their gardens and allotments, were seriously impressive, with jams, preserves, spirits, wines, and more, alongside stunning floral and baking displays.

The art and photography competitions proved how much creative talent there is in the village, with some spectacular creations.

All the fun of the day was announced by Wayne Kenny, the MC for the day, who must have been boiling in his full suit, kept everyone abreast of all the goings on and events throughout the day.

Show secretary Sue Sweeney said: “Loddiswell Show proved to be a fabulous fun filled day in glorious sunshine. Children’s Sports, the competitive Tug of Fun and the challenging Loddiswell Fun Run, were all well supported in the blazing heat.

“An ongoing programme of displays and events provided by the Devon Birds of Prey, The Dog Show sponsored by South Moor Vets, Wizzbang, Battlefield Live Lazer Tag, Vintage Tractors/Classic Bikes all proved popular, along with the bouncy castle, face painting, miniature steam train and many other stalls and trade stands.

“The barbecue, bar and tea tent had a busy time providing much needed refreshment. The Horticultural tent displayed an interesting range of exhibits of horticulture, baking, craft, children’s craft.

“There was also a display of Tea Cosies displayed by Loddiswell Knit and Knatter group and a 100 years remembrance tribute to Loddiswell residents who took part in WW1. Musical entertainment throughout the afternoon was provided by James Montague and friends.

“Alongside this, Loddiswell Tennis Club ran an Open Day. Local youngsters and adults as well as holidaymakers, were able to have a go at mini tennis and play some full court games, as well as playing Champ/Challenger.

“The child and adult tournament was well subscribed, with eight pairs competing for cash prizes in a series of Tie-break Tens. In a tense final, Sam and Marc beat Sam and Dave.”
