Kingsbridge Tennis club’s ‘Finals Day’ was graced with sunshine, a decent crowd and some exciting matches.

The club has seen its membership grow this year and a number of recent recruits had battled through to the last stages of the annual tournament, where they met mixed fortunes against the old guard.

The first ties saw victory for Lisa Miller over Jo Jenkins (6-4, 6-2) in the Women’s Plate, while Andrew Eynon-Lewis took the honours (6-4, 5-7, 6-1) against Alex Stevenson in the Men’s Plate.

There was a more traditional feel to the Men’s Singles final, in which Andrew Willmott’s glorious backhand touch helped him to a straight-sets victory (6-0, 7-5) over Keith Olver, who reached three finals this year.

The Women’s Singles was a more tense affair – a highly competitive match that ebbed and flowed over two hours, with Claudette Uff eventually seeing off club chairman Lesley Healey (6-3, 4-6, 6-4).

Keith Olver and George Matheson overcame Alex Stephenson and James Barker to secure the Men’s Doubles in straight sets (6-4, 6-2), but it was left to the women to provide the match of the day in their Doubles final.

New members Zoe Martin and Lisa Miller took the first set, but they were unable to finish off club stalwarts Carol Philcox and Claudette Uff in a tense second set tiebreak, eventually going down (6-3, 6-7, 4-6).

Last up, the Mixed Doubles, and another entertaining three-setter, with Keith Olver and Carole Philcox running out eventual winners over Andrew Wilmott and Lesley Healey (6-0, 6-7, 6-3).

If you would like to star in next year’s finals, or just play for pleasure, Kingsbridge Tennis club welcomes all abilities.
