Devon cricket League

2nd XI B division west

Cornwood III 127-1,

Kingsbridge II

125 all out;

Cornwood (20 points) beat Kingsbridge (two) by nine wickets

Kingsbridge seconds knew that travelling to Cornwood with a weakened team was likely to be a hard task, and so it proved.

Winning the toss, Matt Hammett thought it would be better to bat first but may soon have been regretting his decision as the top order failed to build a platform. James Ellis batted well to score 25, but Kings were deep in trouble when they reached 73-6.

However, comeback specialist Chris Browning, along with Olly Robinson, did their best to give Kings a fighting chance.

Browning looked in good form despite being away from the game for more than a year, making 31 valuable runs. Robinson fell for 19 as Kings were eventually bowled out for 125.

In reply Cornwood scored quickly, with runs coming easily as the wicket got better to bat on as the day wore on.

Opening batsman Beaumont was the only one who really looked good, making 52 before Hardy dismissed him, the only wicket to fall.

His opening partner led something of a charmed life, making 35 not out but only thanks to being dropped six times.

As a result Cornwood flew past Kings’ score, reaching 127-1 to take the victory.

For Kings, Edmonds bowled nine overs, finishing with 0-32, Hammett took 0-20 off his nine and Hardy bowled eight overs to earn 1-38.

Kingsbridge will be hoping to bounce back tomorrow when they welcome Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough, with the game starting at 1.30pm.

It was a similar story for the first XI, who earned just three points from the visit of Babbacombe.

Also batting first, they posted 130 all out, Ford top-scoring with 38.

In reply Babbacombe reached the target for the loss of two wickets.

They travel to Plymouth tomorrow to face CS and R.

On the bank holiday Monday, August 31, Kingsbridge Cricket Club will be holding a car boot sale from 10am to noon. Gates will open for sellers at 7.30am.
